It’s that time of year. We’re searching for ideas for that special something for that special someone. Last year, one of my author-friends asked me to pair my book with a gift idea for her readers. This year, I asked some of my nature-writing friends to do the same. I’ve also created a gift guide with a few items for hikers and anyone who wants to bring the outdoor vibe into everyday life. *
Books + gift ideas from my nature-writing friends–and me!
- Can I Spend the Winter with You? by wildlife artist Elizabeth Mordensky | She recommends pairing it with a cuddly stuffed bear, perhaps like this one.
- Nature at Night: Finding Faith, Wonder & Resilience After Dark by Laurie Kehler | Because Laurie’s book is all about nature by night, she recommends pairing it with a red flashlight for nocturnal wildlife observation or the planisphere for navigating the sky.
- Waking Up in the Wilderness is all about experiencing Yellowstone–including what it has to teach us about the fine line between solitude and isolation. I recommend this mug featuring a map of Yellowstone. It’s one of my favorite morning companions!

For Hikers and Anyone Who Wants to Bring the Outdoor Vibe into Everyday Life
- For the Trail: Day Hikes of Yellowstone National Park Map Guide | This is our absolute favorite YNP hiking resource. Maps for other national parks, including Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Olympic, Yosemite, and Yellowstone’s neighbor, Grand Teton National Park, are also available.
- For Bringing the Outside Inside: This lantern lives on my mantel. Whether the light is full-strenghth or dimmed, it makes me so happy!
- For everyday–or the trail: I love the old-style look of these boots--probably because they look just like my first pair, but are actually comfortable. These are my go-to for everyday in the fall and winter, but I see a lot of people sporting them on the trail. (Currently a Black Friday deal on Amazon)
- For Fun: Parks (game): We play this National Park game with our New York kids, and it’s on our list for our at-home game library. It’s a great fit for those who love games and our National Parks.
For Writers
- Leather Notebook: While it comes in larger sizes, this size is perfect for taking notes on the go and filing them with index cards at home.
- This pen: Writer’s gotta write, and the RSVP Fine Ballpoint in Violet is the pen for me. Your writer might prefer one of their other colors. When my brother graded his college students’ papers, he used green ink because he thought it was friendly in comparison to red. I use purple because it’s cheerful and vibrant. We all have our vibe.
- Walking on Water: Reflections on Art and Faith by Madeleine L’Engle | Though-provoking and encouraging, this is a regular read for me.
