Hiking Gear We Actually Use 2026

I know of a few winter hikers. For most of us, though, hiking is an activity left to the more temperate seasons. With spring upon us, I wanted to share some things we’re gathering for the coming hiking season.

    1. Hiking/Trekking Poles: In terms of stability and speed, hiking poles changed my hiking game for the good. Mine are old and nothing special. In fact, these may well be more special than mine.
    2. Hydration Pack: Water bladders/packs are the best way to carry plenty of water for a long hike. (When possible, I prefer my standby Nalgene. It’s old-school and way behind the water-bottle times, but it gets the job done.
    3. Trowel: If you’re going to hike, eventually you are going to need one of these. This is not the one we have. It is the one we will be getting because ours is folding model, prone to pinching those of use who are unubservant and/or not mechanically inclined.
    4. Ponchos: Tuck a lightweight, disposable poncho in your pocket or your pack. Nothing ruins a good day like getting soaked.
    5. Sun Hat: Sun protection matters, especially in the middle of the day and especially at high altitude. A wide-brimmed hat helps.  I’m paying for not attending to this when I was younger and am trying to pay better attention now.
    6. Sun Shirts: Continuing the sun theme, my husband and I are in the process of upgrading our hiking clothes—trading in our beloved but moisture-collecting flannel shirts for moisture-wicking shirts with SPF. My husband owns a couple of these. I’m looking at these.
    7. High Energy Trail Snacks: These are provide treat-level energy. We don’t often indulge in but they are yummy.
    8. Yellowstone Hiking Guide: This one is on my list. It’s by the host of my favorite Yellowstone podcast, This Week in Yellowstone. Even with all my time in the park, I learn something in nearly every episode. Beyond the Boardwalks: 50 Incredible Hikes in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem by Douglas Scott
